Ginger is renowned worldwide for its therapeutic properties. Its pungent flavor effectively clears congestion, thins mucus, and warms the digestive system.

During cold and flu season, our immune systems can be weakened by fluctuating weather. If you experience a scratchy throat or a tickle in your nose, consider this simple and effective remedy: Ginger Slurry Tea.

Consuming a few cups of this tea daily at the onset of illness can help keep your mucus flowing freely. Mucus plays a crucial role in your body's defense by trapping viruses and pathogens. When mucus becomes dry or congested, your immune system's effectiveness diminishes significantly.

"The mucosal immune system serves as the body's first line of defense against harmful agents entering through mucosal membranes. It constitutes the largest immune organ, consisting of a single layer of epithelium covered by mucus, where antimicrobial proteins are reinforced by innate and adaptive immune strategies." [1]

To make Ginger Slurry Tea:

  1. Prepare the slurry: Peel and chop a large bulb of ginger. Juice 4-5 lemons (or limes). Blend the ginger and lemon juice in a food processor until a thick slurry forms.

  2. Make a single serving: Add 2 tablespoons of the ginger slurry to a mug. Pour boiling water over the slurry. Add a dash or two of cayenne pepper and 1-2 teaspoons of local honey.

  3. Enjoy: Sip the tea slowly and allow the warmth to soothe your body.

  4. Store the remaining slurry: Transfer the remaining slurry to an airtight jar and refrigerate. It will remain fresh for up to a week.

Bonus Tip 1: Lemon zest is rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, and other beneficial compounds. Incorporate it into your diet in moderation by adding it to salads or other dishes. Be mindful of its high acidity level.

Bonus Tip 2: I enjoy taking this tea with me in the car. The delightful fragrance of the ginger and lemon fills the vehicle, creating a mood-boosting and invigorating experience throughout my day.
